HABITAT FOR HUMANITY VOLUNTEER SAFETY COURSE

You’ve made an important decision to be a Habitat for Humanity volunteer. Helping a family obtain a safe, decent and affordable home is a very gratifying experience. And whether you’re accustomed to working in construction, have no experience at all, or fall somewhere in between, it’s crucial that the work you do on the jobsite is done safely.

That’s why the Habitat for Humanity Affiliate Insurance Program has designed an Online Safety Course just for Volunteers. This course is a very effective training tool for volunteers prior to volunteer day. It’s easy to use… takes just 30 minutes to complete… and empowers you with the safety knowledge you need to be an effective part of your Habitat home build. Upon completion of the online course, the Habitat affiliate you are volunteering for will receive a certificate of completion for their records.

First read the Course Instructions and then you’re set for taking the course.

“Divas Building Dreams” 2010 Women Build

February 2nd, 2009 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

WHO: Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County (HHFSCC) is excited and pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Divas Building Dreams Women’s Build.

Mission: Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God’s love and can live and grow into all that God intends.

Background: Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County is an independent local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, governed by a volunteer board of directors from St. Charles County.  It is a non-profit ecumenical Christian ministry dedicated to constructing decent, affordable homes in St. Charles County in partnership with hard-working, low-income families. By requiring the payment of a 30 year interest-free mortgage and 350 “sweat equity hours”, Habitat for Humanity offers families a “hand up” rather than a “hand out”.  Habitat St. Charles has built 41 homes since 1997.

WHAT: We are in search of passionate women to help with the Divas Building Dreams 2010 Women’s Build. This event will be extremely empowering and will help HFHFSCC provide a deserving family with a decent, safe and affordable place to live.

Women’s Build Background: In 1991, a group of women in Charlotte, N.C., completed the first women-built Habitat for Humanity house. With this, the seeds for Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program were planted. A handful of Habitat for Humanity affiliates such as Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver and Atlanta Habitat for Humanity built houses with women crews over the next few years.

Since 2003, in large part due to the support of our underwriter, Lowe’s, and major sponsor Home Interiors and Gifts, Inc., the program has more than doubled in size. To date, more than 1,400 official Women Builds have been completed since 1998, and the program is growing across international borders to empower women everywhere to address the problem of poverty housing for themselves, their families and their neighbors.

WHERE:  HFHSCC recently purchased 14 fully developed lots off of Salt Lick Rd. in St. Peters, MO. The development has been named the Enclaves at Eisenhower. The development is a part of HFHSCC’s 5 year, 60 home, A World of Hope, It Starts at Home capital campaign.

WHEN: HFHSCC will be hosting several special events in honor of the “Divas Building Dreams” 2010 Women’s Build including: a Women’s Build Groundbreaking kick-off on May 8th  at 9am in the Enclaves at Eisenhower and opportunities for team build days.  National Women’s Build Week is May 2-9, 2010, with culmination on Mother’s Day. The timeline for a typical Habitat home is based on a 17 week build schedule. Interest for the build and recruitment of members will continue from now until May.

WHY: HFHSCC is committed to finding a permanent solution to the affordable housing crisis in St. Charles County. Support of women in the local community is overwhelming and a Women’s Build is the perfect way to give back to a deserving family. A Women’s Build will provide one more Habitat home in St. Charles County, while continuing the mission of HFHSCC. Each build also serves as an opportunity to spread Habitat’s message and educate the community about the benefits of homeownership.

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED:

Sponsorship – levels available, please inquire within

Team Captain – responsible for recruitment of 10-20 team member volunteers, assist with fundraising, coordinate and organize build days

In-Kind Donor – donation of building materials and or services

Build Volunteer – donate time to build site (individual or part of a team)

Lunch provider – Provide and or serve and set-up lunch for build volunteers on-site

Team Captains are being recruited to round up 10-20 women to form a team to raise funds and assist on the build. Each team member is asked to donate a minimum of $25 and a build day. Teams will be awarded for most members recruited, largest number of members and most days worked on-site. Teams will be eligible to receive t-shirts and other Women’s Build memorabilia.

If you or your organization is interested in participating in the Safety National “Divas Building Dreams” Women Build please contact Anita Sandage at HFHSCC, at 636-978-5712 or anita@habitatstcharles.org for more information or to be added to the mail and or e-mail list.

Lowes is a national partner with Habitat for Humanity International and is the underwriter of the Women Build program. By 2013, Lowes will have contributed $40 million to support Habitat’s mission of providing affordable housing by helping make homeownership a reality for hard-working families in need. The Women Build program empowers women to build Habitat for Humanity homes, enabling them to positively impact the lives of children.

A BIG thanks to all 2009 Women Build sponsors: Lowes Home Improvement, national underwriting sponsor, Tammy Stratman-Brown Charities, The St. Louis Home Builders Association, IBEW L.U. 1, Plumbers and Pipefitters L.U. 562, Sheet Metal Workers L.U. 36, the City of St. Charles and Ameren UE. Also, a HUGE thanks to all of the DIVAS, which are the main sponsor of the build!

The Need for Volunteers

August 22nd, 2008 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

2009 was an amazing year for HFHSCC. We complete the Ashland Meadows subdivision and completed 3 homes in the Enclaves at Eisenhower development located in St. Peters. We know that none of this would be possible without the effort and dedication of our volunteers. In 2009 over 2,000 volunteers worked approximately 29,000 hours in the affiliate office, ReStore, Habitat fundraisers and on the job-site. Thanks to all of the wonderful individuals, organizations, faith based groups, businesses and community service volunteers who have donated their time and talents to help fulfill the HFHSCC mission.

Did you know that only 27% of the American people had a volunteer experience last year and one in three volunteers don’t return the following year. Volunteering is one of the most rewarding experiences an individual can have. The BBB of St. Louis states that 62% of people want to work for a company that give them a chance to use their skills to help a non-profit organization. The main focus of today’s volunteers is the environment, poverty, and community issues.

Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County faces many obstacles in providing affordable housing to deserving families.

Approximately 830 people were deemed homeless in February of 2009, 237 ore people than in 2008. The demand is high, while the Housing Authority lists 1,110 households in St. Charles County living at  or below the poverty level.

What can you do to help? Habitat will be building homes in St. Peters in 2009. Volunteers are needed to complete construction by the end of the year. EXPERIENCED CREW LEADERS NEEDED!!! We will be working every Wednesday - Saturday 8am-4pm. Individuals are welcome on-site any day, but groups can schedule a day with Mary Gibson at (636)978-5712. Contact the Habitat office for more information, build days or directions to the site.
